RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA: On 4 August 2020, a huge explosion occurred in the port of Beirut, Lebanon, causing many casualties and injuries as well as heavy losses to property and the infrastructure. The leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia immediately directed the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) to send Saudi airlift (air bridge) planes to Lebanon to deliver humanitarian and relief assistance to the victims of the explosion.

Immediately following the deadly blast, KSrelief also rushed to support Lebanese medical teams on the ground to help victims via several humanitarian partner associations and ambulance teams funded by the center and already operating in Lebanon.

Two hundred tons of aid have already been provided by the Saudi airlift. On 7 August, 2020, the first two planes arrived in Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport, and a third plane landed on 8 August; the two shipments have provided a total of 200 tons of aid, including ventilators, intensive care patient monitors, electronic infusion pumps, first aid supplies, medicines, antibiotics and painkillers, disinfectants and sterilizers, masks and protection materials, IV fluids, and other multiple medical supplies. Aid also included shelter support comprising tents, blankets, and rugs. Food, cookware and other supplies were also included in the airlift. A specialized KSrelief team accompanied the shipments to follow up and supervise the distribution operations.

Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor to the Royal Court and Supervisor General of KSrelief, said in a recent press statement that the relief air bridge is being provided thanks to a directive from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who instructed KSrelief to deliver urgent medical and humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of the Lebanese people.  He added that the directive embodies the Kingdom’s strong commitment to helping people in need around the world by providing impartial aid across all humanitarian sectors.
