KSrelief Funds Early Warning Center in Somalia

Time: 20 August 2020

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA: The Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre was launched in the Republic of Somalia after being equipped with funding and support from King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The project aims to strengthen the work capacity of the Somali Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in managing natural disasters and monitoring the situation in the country, and to guide stakeholders in areas likely to be at risk. The center is equipped with the latest early warning methods as well as a specialized task force to follow up on the progress of the work.

The Somali Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Natural Disaster Management, Hamza Saeed Hamza, thanked the Kingdom, represented by KSrelief, for developing and supporting ministry cadres and for providing funding to establish Somalia’s first early warning center.

“It’s a very good thing that we’re going to be able to do this,” said Khader Sheikh Mohammed, director of the Multi-Risk Early Warning Unit. “We have specialized cadres to follow the conditions in the country, and things have been going well since the center started its work. A few days ago, we issued a warning about severe storms blowing in some coastal areas of the country, took preventive measures and endured the storms without registering any significant losses, thank God.”

Earlier this year, KSrelief launched a project to support capacity-building for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in Somalia. The project aims to improve the ministry’s operational capacity by enhancing humanitarian work and disaster management in Somalia, including capacity and basic skills development. The project also includes solutions for regional offices and early warning, and supports the Somali Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs by providing an air transport account for basic humanitarian movements.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by KSrelief, provides impartial, comprehensive humanitarian assistance to people in need around the world.
